High in the mountains, north of Chiang Rai, Thailand, in the Aka village known as Doi Chang, there live a proud and industrious people. For many years now, they have been growing coffee.The coffee trees were a gift from the King of Thailand in the 1970s as a way to give the Aka an alternative to opium production. Abonzo Coffee is named after the farmer’s grandfather who helped convince the reluctant Aka villagers to adopt coffee trees over opium poppies, which was a staple in the 70s. Abonzo coffee farm exists to help raise the Aka people out of their cycle of poverty.
